Bolshoi Ballet's Rare Performances Come to Queensland

THE Bolshoi Ballet needs little introduction. One of Russia's premiere professional ballet companies based in the country's oldest and most famous theatre, Bolshoi is known for its size and might.

Home to more than 200 dancers, the company is performing a season exclusive to QPAC.

The company returns to Australia for the first time in nearly two decades and will be performing two rare ballets for Queensland audiences.

Firstly, Le Corsaire is a shining example of the Imperial Russian style of the 19th century combining classical dancing with lavish sets and costumes.

Based on Yuri Burlaka and Alexei Ratmanksy's 2007 adaptation, Le Corsaire is one of the most expensive productions ever mounted by the company and has never been performed in Australia.

The Bright Stream is a 20th-century masterpiece which has been revived after it was banned by Soviet Union authorities because of its setting on a collective farm.

Renowned for its score composed by Dmitri Shostakovich, The Bright Stream features ethnic dances including the famously physical Cossack style.

Both shows will be performed with the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and conducted by Pavel Sorokin.

But if you can't make it to Brisbane then don't fear.

There will be a regional simulcast of the Bolshoi's June 4 performance of Le Corsaire at theatres in Ayr, Bundaberg, Cairns, Gladstone, Mackay, Hervey Bay, Rockhampton and Toowoomba.

Le Corsaire plays QPAC's Lyric Theatre from May 30 to June 5 and The Bright Stream plays the Lyric Theatre from June 7 to 9.

Royals Visit Australia: Prince George May Visit Australia Next Year as Prince William Says Royal Baby Is 'Loud But Good-Looking'

Prince William Says the New Family will be Visiting Australia Next Year

While mingling with the crowd at Anglesey county fair, William told visiting Australian couple Max and Maxine Davies, from Victor Harbor, south of Adelaide, that the new family hope to travel to Australia soon.

"George is doing really well, thank you,” he said, according to UK media reports. "We are all very hopefully coming to Australia next year."

The couple’s son, Mark Davies, said it was his mother’s second brush with royalty.

“She actually met Prince Charles, I think it was back in 1969. It was while she was on another holiday over in the UK.”

“It’s all pretty exciting, especially for mum who’s a fanatical royalist.”

Mr Davies said his parents, retired farmers who moved from Naracoorte to Victor Harbor in 2004, were about a week into a two-month trip of Britain and Europe that included visiting family near Manchester, a trip to Spain and a Mediterranean cruise.

“I haven’t heard from them just yet, but I imagine they’re just as thrilled about it as everyone over here seems to be,” the Naracoorte resident said.

Victor Harbor Bowling Club member Bill Aldridge, who plays with Max Davies, hopes his fellow player’s conversation with Prince William was enough to convince him to visit Victor Harbor while in Australia.

“We’d love him to come down to our new bowling green,” he said.

“It would definitely lift the spirits in Victor Harbor and create a bit of a buzz having royalty around, although I know the chances are pretty slim.”

The trip would echo Prince William’s trip to Australia as a baby with Princess Diana and Prince Charles in 1983, when he was less than a year old.

William also opened up on parenthood, telling the crowd that baby Prince George is "loud but good looking".

"Catherine in sorry that she cannot be here today at the County Show," William said in his speech, before chatting with locals, inspecting livestock and participating in a falconry display.

The Boss Bruce Springsteen Set to Return to Australia in Early 2014

BRUCE Springsteen may be returning to Australia as early as next year.

Radio station Triple M last night posted a news item on their website which appears to to suggest The Boss will tour in February and March 2014.

The item was swiftly taken down, however an eager Bruce Springsteen fansite posted screengrabs of the item online, sparking rumours and sending Boss enthusiasts into a frenzy

Though yet to be confirmed by Springsteen's management or Australian promoters Frontier, the item suggested the 2014 visit will be a full national tour.

A possible 2014 tour would come after just an East Coast visit this year which angered fans in Perth and Adelaide.

The leak has The Boss playing dates in Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, the Hunter Valley and Brisbane.

The rumoured Melbourne venue is AAMI Park, which has only been used as a concert by the Foo Fighters in the past.

It also claimed iconic band Hunters and Collectors would reform to support The Boss at the Melbourne concert.

Springsteen's Australian tour this March sold over 150,000 tickets and grossed over $25 million.

Can Craig Make it Six Wins In a Row? Ipswich 360

CRAIG Lowndes is the hot favourite for a podium finish at this weekend's Coates Hire Ipswich 360. 
The three-time V8 Supercars champion has won the past five races straight in Ipswich, clean-sweeping three races in 2011 and another two last year. 

He's finished in the top two in seven of the past eight races at Queensland Raceway since 2009 and has 11 career race wins at the circuit - more than any other driver. 

The showdown for the 2013 Australian V8 Supercar Championships continues when the Coates Hire Ipswich 360 fires up at Queensland Raceway tomorrow through to Sunday. 

It's shaping up to be an unforgettable weekend of high-octane action as the V8 Supercar stars line up to gain serious points in the championship. 

Petrol heads turned out in their thousands to welcome the V8 Supercar teams as they made a spectacular entrance into town yesterday in the Transporter Parade. 

Fans met their favourite drivers when they made a pit stop at Coates Hire Ipswich store at Churchill. 
But the big event Holden and Ford fans are eagerly awaiting is race 22-24 of the Australian V8 Supercar Championships, which green-lights on Saturday at 3.40pm. 

The next generation of V8 Supercars will take on the new sprint format at the Queensland Raceway, dubbed the Paperclip, for the first time in Queensland. 

Ford flyer Will Davison, who won at Ipswich for the Holden Racing Team in 2009, will be among 26 other drivers vying to defeat Craig Lowndes in his Triple Eight Commodore who has taken five victories in a row at the circuit. 

Davison said the unpredictable performance variations brought to the category by Car of the Future, the all soft-tyre sprint-race format of the Coates Hire Ipswich 360 and a limited 20-tyre bank were signs that Lowndes may be beatable. 

"I am expecting quite a lot of competitive cars there," he said. 

"Having a car that is good on the tyres in the 100km races on the Sunday is crucial. I think it will be really interesting to see whether we pit or not. 

"We have obviously gone through a lot of different strategy options … and we have a very limited tyre bank so how you manage those tyres will be interesting." 

Davison has scored 1376 points in the 2013 championship. He trails leader Jamie Whincup (Red Bull Racing Australia Holden Commodore VF) by 215 points and Lowndes (Red Bull) by 104. 

After a strong 2-4 Townsville result, Davison's teammate, Mark Winterbottom, has jumped into fourth in the championship on 1337 after earning the most points of anyone in the field at the Sucrogen Townsville 400. 
There are 300 points up for grabs this weekend across the three races. Support races will include the Dunlop Series, Touring Car Masters, Formula Ford and Aussie Racing Cars. 

There will be entertainment for the whole family with aerial displays by Australia's top gun, Matt Hall, Team Army shows, Air Force Super Hornet flyover, Shannons auto show, car club displays, Team Bray Racing with their supercharged burn-out machines and the University of Queensland's Formula SAE team. 

Treat the kids to plenty of action on track and off with the new Disney-Pixar Fun Zone, including Mack the transporter, Finding Nemo, Toy Story and Monsters University. Kids 12 and under receive free general admission with a paying adult.
