Australia Must Boost Tourism: Govt

Australia must do more to boost inbound tourism as the sector suffers from a strong local currency, increased competition from Asian destinations and less European visitors, the federal government says.

Speaking at an Australian Tourism Export Council conference Senator Nick Sherry said tourism operators needed to be more productive and innovative to halt the sector's decline.

"Australia's international market share has declined in recent years and domestic tourism expenditure has fallen since 2000," Mr Sherry told the conference on Wednesday.

"Not least of these challenges (is) increasing competition and the rise of the Australian dollar.

"We need to do something about this through investment in new products, boosting productivity, increasing uptake of digital technology and addressing labour and skills shortages."

He said there were no short term solutions to problems facing the industry, but said a surge in the number of tourists from Indonesia had been positive.

"Indonesian visitor growth alone was about 32 per cent in the last two years and by 2020 we expect the market value to more than double to $1.1 billion," he said.

Produced by Grammy Award-winner Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse, Adele, Kaiser Chiefs, Lily Allen) and mixed by Spike Stent (Madonna, Björk, No Doubt), it features guest vocals/rap from long-time Duran Duran pal/collaborator Ana Matronic of

As the models take on rock star roles playing Simon, John, Nick, and Roger, the nine minute video unfolds into a stunning, fast-paced, high fashion affair, that has fast become the most talked about collaboration of its kind this year. From the very beginning, when DURAN DURAN first took the visual imperatives of the New Romantic movement of the 1980s to a whole other level, defining the MTV generation, they have built a loyal army of fans who have stayed with them to this day.

As this new chapter begins, they have nothing left to prove, but everything to play for. So for them and their loyal army of fans… All You Need Is Now!

High-Speed Rail on Track - Sydney to Gold Coast

THE Gillard Government is pressing ahead with its plans for a high speed rail network on the East Coast.

The second and final stage of the government's landmark study into high speed rail is underway.

Travelling at 400km/h, the fast train would make a trip between Sydney and Gold Coast possible in just three hours, yet the cost of the network is tipped to cost $100 billion.

Infrastructure and Transport Minister Anthony Albanese said the latest development comes after the government retained AECOM, the lead author of the interim report.

"After a competitive tendering process, this leading global consultancy now has the opportunity to complete the work it started almost a year ago - and to do so it has assembled a consortium which brings together a broad range of expertise: KPMG, SKM, ACIL Tasman, Booz & Co, Hyder and Grimshaw Architects," Mr Albanese said.

Over the next 12 months, the work done in stage one and the findings contained in the interim report will be further tested and refined, he said.

"AECOM and its partners will determine with greater precision the alignment of the track and station locations, improve the accuracy of the costs associated with building and operating the network, re-evaluate patronage projections, and recommend financing options along with possible governance arrangements,"

Since its release in early August, more than 316,000 copies of the interim report have been downloaded from my Department's website - an indication of widespread community interest in this technology.

"Indeed High Speed Rail could be a game-changer, with the potential to better integrate our regional and metropolitan communities, ease congestion on our roads and at our airports as well as provide a new foundation for a low carbon, high productivity economy.

"However, this kind of monumental endeavour must take place in a deliberate, thoughtful manner.

"The work we're undertaking is all about planning for Australia's future, not just for the next five years but for the next five decades," he said.

Copies of the interim report and the terms of reference for the study can be downloaded from: www.infrastructure.gov.au/rail/trains/high_speed.

Gladstone Regional Tourist Numbers Boosted

TOURISM operators should gain confidence from the latest Tourism Queensland Gladstone Regional Snapshot.

The report, which compares June 2011 to June 2010, shows visitor numbers for the Gladstone region had increased in almost all areas.

"Gladstone recorded increases in domestic visitation in the year ending June 2011, driven by solid growth in holiday and business visitation. In contrast, VFR (visiting friends and relatives) was weaker," the report said.

Gladstone Area Promotion and Development project officer Melissa Dahtler said the region's businesses should take great encouragement from the report.

She said compared to the previous quarter's report, where there was a significant downturn after the floods, tourism had made a great turnaround.

The visitor figures, which Ms Dahtler said were classed as overnight stays, were up by 16% annually and holiday figures, which are stays of one week or longer, were up 30% annually.

Gold Coast to Host in 2018

The Gold Coast’s successful bid for the 2018 Commonwealth Games will provide a much-needed tonic for the tourism and accommodation industry said Tourism Australia managing director Andrew McEvoy.

Mr McEvoy said Queensland has endured its fair share of “setbacks and shocks” and the news will provide a much needed boost to the state’s tourism industry.

“This is great news for Australian tourism,” Mr McEvoy said.

"Australia has great events expertise and not only stages them well but is also very good at ensuring the best possible economic impact and capitalising on the global exposure those things generate.”

Mr McEvoy added the recent opening of the new Hilton Surfers Paradise Hotel, Peppers Broadbeach and the Sea Temple Surfers Paradise Resort adds to the tourism revitalization and infrastructure of the state.

“No doubt, this just the start of the Gold Coast’s renaissance.”

The Accommodation Association of Australia chief executive officer Richard Munro, said that hosting of the 2018 Commonwealth Games will provide a much-needed boost for the accommodation industry, as well as the wider business community.

“Having the 2018 Commonwealth Games will be a real fillip for local business, notably one of the most important sectors on the Gold Coast – the accommodation industry,” Mr Munro said.

“Preparing for and hosting this major event will inject confidence into the economy in south-east Queensland and will trigger further investment in tourism accommodation infrastructure in the region.”

Mr Munro added that accommodation and tourism operators embrace the chance to host international and domestic visitors and be given the opportunity to ensure there visit is truly unforgettable.

What's On Ipswich: Full Steam Ahead for Rail Campaign

IT'S full steam ahead for the city's tourism industry.

Tourism Minister Jan Jarratt visited Ipswich and Rosewood yesterday to help launch a new rail heritage campaign.

Ms Jarratt unveiled The Amazing Time Machines brochure at The Workshops Rail Museum.

The brochure is the result of collaboration between council and four local rail attractions - the Workshops museum, Grandchester Model Steam Railway, Rosewood Rail Museum, and the Queensland Pioneer Steam Railway.

Tourism Committee chairman David Pahlke said the brochure would encourage more visitors to the Ipswich region through promotion and special offers.

Ms Jarratt praised the city's tourist attractions, even comparing Ipswich to her Whitsundays hometown.

"The Whitsundays is a popular tourist destination, but there're some equally remarkable places here," Ms Jarratt said.

"You can go to theme parks like Disneyland or Dreamworld but you can't really see who the people are and what the town is about, whereas here you can see that Ipswich has a very special place in Queensland's history.

"Ipswich is the heart and soul of the rail industry."

Mayor Paul Pisasale said tourism played a vital role in Ipswich's economy, and said the brochure would help boost the industry.

"There's Dreamworld and Sea World, well, now we have Steam World," Cr Pisasale quipped.

Cr Pahlke said Ipswich was the birthplace of rail in Queensland, with the first train in the state travelling between Ipswich and Grandchester in 1861.

Queensland Tourism Industry Canvassed on China Growth

Tourism Queensland has released a discussion paper on opportunities and challenges facing the industry as the State ramps-up efforts to snare a greater share of the burgeoning China market.

Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Minister Jan Jarratt said work was well advanced on developing the new Project China Strategy, with industry feedback critical.

"Sustainably growing our share of the China market and giving Chinese visitors a great experience involves everyone and I want industry to have their say, with consultation open until December," Ms Jarratt said.

"The discussion paper raises issues from better catering for Chinese travellers to diversifying target markets such as attracting different age groups and destinations so it is important for industry to think about these issues and give their feedback," she said.

"The resulting Project China Strategy will map out our long-term vision to grow our share of the crucial China market, with potential spending by Chinese visitors in Australia tipped to reach $7-9 billion by 2020."

Ms Jarratt said China was already Queensland's third largest international market and one of the fastest growing, with 198,000 Chinese visiting Queensland in the year ending June 2011 - 25% more than the year prior.

"Chinese travellers are big spenders, outlaying $381 million on their trips to Queensland in the year ending June 2011 - a significant $48 million more than during the previous year," she said.

"With Chinese visitor numbers forecast to continue growing by double digits over the next few years, it's vital that our tourism industry has the skills, products and experiences to ensure they have the best possible Queensland experience, and when they go home they tell their friends and family that Queensland is where Australia Shines."

Topics raised in the discussion paper include:

Fine-tuning Queensland's aviation strategy; Educating the Queensland tourism industry about Chinese travellers' behaviours and expectations; Ensuring marketing efforts are focused on specific geographic areas in China, particularly high yield visitor regions, and are carried out jointly with key industry partners; Preparing and developing Queensland's tourism industry to deliver high quality experiences to Chinese visitors; and The potential for Chinese investment in Queensland tourism infrastructure.

Ms Jarratt said Tourism Queensland already has a strong presence in China focusing on relationships with key industry partners and aggressive marketing and retail activities to attract Chinese visitors.

"An outcome of our strong industry relationships has already resulted in China Southern Airlines announcing that from October 30 the airline will increase its Guangzhou-Brisbane flights from three to four per week and add Beijing to the route.

"This will increase the number of seats per week into Brisbane from 846 to 1,132.

"Industry development focusing on the China market has already begun, with this week's infrastructure investment forum on the Gold Coast and Tourism Queensland's workshop series on China cultural awareness helping operators develop the skills and product that appeal to Chinese visitors."

Feedback on the discussion paper will be incorporated in the new 2012-2016 China market strategy.

Brisbane Tourism News: Queen Elizabeth's Four-Hour Visit to Brisbane Leaves Lasting Impression

SHE spent just over four hours in the state that bears her name but the Queen's visit left a lasting impression on a recovering Brisbane.

More than 45,000 people crowded into South Bank to welcome Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh to Queensland for maybe the last time.

Despite soaring temperatures, the crowd swelled - as many as 30-people deep in some sections - waiting for a glimpse of the Queen.

After a trip down the Brisbane River, she later comforted flood and cyclone victims and thanked volunteers who helped the state through its summer of disasters.

Ben Conway, 8, was one of the lucky ones to meet the monarch. The last time he wore his Queen's Guard's outfit, it was among his school mates at a Rochedale State School cultural day.

Yesterday, the little boy from Daisy Hill got to don the ceremonial uniform of the palace foot guards again.

But this time he got to meet the Queen.

Ben was among a handful of excited children plucked from a crowd of more than 45,000 at South Bank to meet Her Majesty.

The 85-year-old monarch and the eight-year-old Queensland boy may not have exchanged many words, but they shared smiles and a photograph instead.

Asked about whether he was nervous, Ben declared "not at all", insisting "I had fun".

It was Ben's mother, Barbara, who was more overawed by the occasion.

The family emigrated from England a decade ago to settle in southeast Queensland.

Mrs Conway, 44, said she made the outfit for Ben to wear to a cultural day where students wore costumes from another country.

Mrs Conway, Ben and his older brother David, 10, waited at South Bank from 8am, and as the crowd gathered, they feared even seeing the Queen was going to be difficult.

And while some people in the crowd suffered under the sun, Ben soldiered on with only one piece of his apparel giving him grief in the heat: "Just my hat," he said.

The 45,000-strong crowd at South Bank yesterday was the biggest to welcome Her Majesty and the Duke of Edinburgh since the royal pair touched down in Australia last week.

The city, for its part, turned on a glorious spring day, with temperatures hitting 27C and several royal watchers subsequently treated for heat exhaustion.

It was Her Majesty's 16th visit to Australia and her first tour of Brisbane since 2002.

After landing at Brisbane Airport, the royal couple was taken to Bretts Wharf, where they boarded a boat for a trip along the Brisbane River.

Brisbane Tourism News: The Queen's Arrives in Brisbane

Queen Elizabeth has arrived in Brisbane for what could be the monarch's last visit to her namesake state.

The Queen, wearing a pale green coat and matching hat, and Prince Philip touched down at Brisbane airport just after 11am (AEST) on a flight from Canberra.

Hundreds of people gathered outside a security fence to watch the Queen's arrival, many waving Australian flags.

The royal couple was greeted by dignitaries including Queensland Premier Anna Bligh and Queensland Governor Penelope Wensley, who will accompany the royal couple on a cruise up the Brisbane River.

Ms Bligh, wearing a scarlet suit and cream hat, has said she'd do her best to paint a picture of the damage the surging river did to the city in January.

Governor Wensley greeted the Queen with a traditional curtsey, but Ms Bligh followed Prime Minister Julia Gillard's lead and bowed to the monarch.

The royal couple then climbed into a vehicle, bound for their river cruise.

Ms Bligh earlier admitted to being nervous about meeting the royal couple and said she'd look to the Queen for conservational cues during the river cruise, due to leave from Bretts Wharf ferry terminal at 11.30am (AEST).

'She'll be able to see a city that's well and truly recovered,' Ms Bligh told ABC radio earlier.

'I'll be pointing out the worst hit areas for her to see just how much things have improved since then.'

Royal watchers began staking out viewing positions early on Monday at sites along the river, including at the ferry terminal.

Among the scores of wellwishers at the site is die-hard royal watcher Shirley Rogers, who's brought along an elaborately wrapped tea towel as a present for the Queen.

Decked out in her finest pearls and a red hat, Ms Rogers said the Queen, who is 85, continued to show remarkable energy.

'I've always loved her. She's down to earth, so natural, a colourful person,' she told AAP.

Also there is Janice Warriner, who turned out to see the Queen on previous visits in 1954, 1970 and 1988.

'I like her as a person and I like the idea of a monarchy. I think it's not broken, so why fix it.'

The royal visit will focus heavily on Queensland's deadly summer of natural disasters.

On Monday afternoon, after arriving at South Bank, the Queen and Prince Philip will meet with flood and cyclone victims who lost family members and homes.

Ms Bligh said the Queen had expressed a strong desire to meet with people who'd suffered the most, and would see that beyond the 'shiny veneer' of recovery, many people were still hurting.

The royal couple will explore the river aboard the cruiser Pure Adrenalin, alongside the premier, her husband Greg Withers, Governor Wensley and her husband Stuart McCosker.

It should be a comfortable ride, the 27 metre luxury wave piercing catamaran is fully air conditioned with spacious viewing decks.

Australian Domesic Intentions Fall as International Picks Up

More Aussies are taking advantage of the strong Aussie dollar and planning overseas trips, dropping the number of Australians intending to travel domestically down three percent over the year compared to the same time last year.

According to a Roy Morgan Research Holiday Tracking Survey, the number of Aussies intending to go on a domestic trip over the next 12 months has fallen to 55 percent while the number planning an international trip grew nine percent in August this year, up one percent on the same month last year.

Roy Morgan Research international director of tourism Jane Janniello said domestic travel may pick up if expert predictions that the Aussie dollar will weaken come to life.

“However, the long-term outlook for domestic tourism is not rosy, with the percentage of Australians saying they would like a domestic holiday at 76% in August 2011, down from 78% in August 2010 and 80% in August 2006,” she explained.

Of the Aussie 14 years and older, around 68 percent said they intend to take at least one holiday over next, down from 70 percent last year.

Ms Janniello added that the leading was for Aussies to plan a trip is online and through books, with 86 percent of holiday intenders access the net at least once a month, while 61 percent say internet is most useful media for travel and accommodation.
“Of those holiday intenders who booked their last holiday, 58% did so via the internet,” she concluded.

Queensland Gets a Vitamin Boost

Tourism Queensland has launched a new AUD4 million campaign called ‘Vitamin Me’ promoting Queensland as the ideal destination to unwind and relax.

Kicking off the campaign's activities from 22 October, Minister for Tourism, manufacturing and small business Jan Jarratt said Vitamin Me highlighted the natural beauty that Queensland offered visitors.

“Vitamin Me is the name given to that feeling of relaxation you get from a Queensland holiday. It's a fun, creative idea that demonstrates why Queensland is Where Australia Shines,” Ms Jarratt said.

Ms Jarratt said to celebrate the campaign, Tourism Queensland has developed a fun way for people to test their Vitamin Me levels in an online quiz, where participants go into the draw to win an AUD10, 000 Queensland holiday.

“There are also many Queensland holiday deals on offer, from short breaks and experiences to give a quick boost, to longer holidays to help maintain your Vitamin Me levels.”

Tourism Queensland chief executive Anthony Hayes said the campaign was designed to strengthen Tourism Queensland’s brand Queensland Where Australia Shines.

“As we near the end of the year most people’s energy levels are pretty depleted and the campaign is designed to hit domestic the market in the lead up to the summer holiday booking period by using a range of aggressive cinema, print, online and outdoor channels.

“Using fun, creative tools such as the online quiz to ‘test’ Vitamin Me levels is a great way to get people thinking about how they’re feeling right now and how much better a Queensland holiday will make them feel.”

Brisbane Tourism News: New Virgin Australia Route a Boost for Local Tourism

The launch today of new Virgin Australia direct return flights from Port Macquarie to Brisbane will provide a much needed boost to local tourism in both destinations.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Accommodation Association of Australia, Richard Munro, congratulated Virgin Australia for adding more services to regional areas, and the Federal Government for its investment in local airport infrastructure which has made this new route possible.

"Accommodation and tourism operators in these areas welcome the new flights, which allow greater access for more international and domestic travellers to NSW's beautiful mid-north coast, and all that Brisbane has to offer," said Mr Munro.

"It is great to see Virgin Australia expanding into these emerging regional areas, where hard working local accommodation and tourism operators are ready and waiting to welcome guests. Making it easier for international travellers to visit more of Australia's unique destinations, and for Australians to holiday and travel within Australia will provide a boost to our home-grown domestic tourism industry. This also helps to boost to the economy of Australia as a whole."

Queensland stars in whale documentary to be beamed to 2 million Malaysian viewers

A new whale documentary being filmed in Queensland could reach 2 million Malaysian viewers when it airs later this year. This week one of the largest television networks in Malaysia, TV3 begins filming on the Fraser Coast and other locations.
The humpbacks call Queensland home between July and November when they frolic in our calm, safe waters off the Fraser Coast.

The Fraser Coast has front row seats to some of the best whale action where you can experience humpbacks up close as they breach up out of the water or curiously swim alongside whale-watching boats.

The Malaysia TV3 network is focusing their documentary on the humpbacks which stay and play in Hervey Bay. As part of their filming schedule, the crew will also visit a Sunshine Coast zoo, theme park and markets as well as walk through a national park and taste the delightful local cuisine of the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The crew will be filming interviews with local whale experts, whale watching tour operators and tourism industry representatives, join several whale watching tours and take in the Hervey Bay landscape.

Queensland Secures Right to Host World's Young Cricket Stars

Queensland will host the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2012 for the first time ever in an event which will see the best young cricket talent in the world playing in Brisbane, on the Sunshine Coast and in Townsville next year, Premier Anna Bligh announced today.

Securing the event, through a partnership with Events Queensland, Cricket Australia and Queensland Cricket, represents a major milestone for cricket in Queensland - and it's only the second time in the event's 24-year history it's been held in Australia.

"This is great news for Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and Townsville because it will bring the best young cricketers in the world here to play locally," Ms Bligh said.

"This is a first for Queensland and it's the only the second time Australia has hosted the competition - the last time being in 1988 in Melbourne and Adelaide.

"This event will deliver an economic shot in the arm to the host communities and showcase Queensland to the world - attracting 400 players and officials from 16 countries and generating an expected 7,000 bed nights for the local tourism industry."

"In addition, it will be televised into the homes of cricket fans in more than 100 countries including in Asia, the UK and South Africa via broadcaster ESPN STAR Sports."

Sports Minister Phil Reeves said the event - held every two years - had also previously been held in countries including New Zealand, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and South Africa.

"This is a truly international event that further cements Queensland's status as the Australian events state," Mr Reeves said.

"It's particularly exciting to be hosting it in 2012 because Australia is the current defending champion after winning the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in New Zealand in 2010."

"Having this event here in Queensland as the chosen location in Australia next year is a vote of confidence in our ability to host major sporting events of international significance."

Ms Bligh and Mr Reeves thanked the ICC, Cricket Australia, Queensland Cricket and Events Queensland for their partnership which had delivered the event to Queensland.

Cricket Australia Chief Executive Officer James Sutherland said: "The ICC U19 Cricket World Cup is the showcase event for best young cricketers in the world and is where the next Cameron White or Yuvraj Singh gets their first real taste of top-level international cricket.

"It was only a couple of years ago we saw Mitch Marsh captain the Australia Under-19 team to victory in New Zealand with talents such as Josh Hazlewood, Alister McDermott and Alex Keath alongside him.

"We are very grateful to Queensland Cricket and Events Queensland for their support in hosting this tournament and I think all the teams and supporters will enjoy their time in Australia's sunshine state.

"We are building towards hosting the senior ICC Cricket World Cup in 2015 and this tournament will play a big part in getting ready for that event."

Queensland Cricket CEO, Graham Dixon, said: "Queensland Cricket is thrilled at the decision to bring the ICC U19 World Cup to our State, and especially with the decision to play in two important regional centres, Townsville and the Sunshine Coast, with the resulting positive economic impact on those areas."

"The support of the State Government and Events Queensland will enable Queensland to provide an international showcase around this tournament, which has grown into a significant event on the world cricket stage.

"Queensland Cricket is acutely aware that the ICC World Cup will be staged in Australia and New Zealand in 2015 and so tournaments like the Under-19 World Cup are an important proving ground for us, and for Cricket Australia, as it gets closer to hosting that major event.

"The support of government at all levels will be a vital part of our collective preparations for 2015, but I know that Queensland Cricket is looking forward to working closely with all of our stakeholders to make the Under-19 World Cup a memorable and successful event."

The event will be held in August next year. Further details of venues, ticket sales and match timings will be announced closer to the tournament.

The tournament will be the ninth ICC U19 Cricket World Cup which started in 1988 with the inaugural event in Melbourne.

Australia has won the event three times - taking home the inaugural title in 1988, then again in 2002 and also last year's event in New Zealand.

Chinese vote Queensland Number One Green Tourism Destination

Queensland has been voted the ‘Green Tourism Destination of the Year’ by more than 4.2 million readers of China’s Travel Weekly tourism trade publication, said Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business Jan Jarratt today.

The announcement was made at the 2011 China Travel & Meetings Industry Awards in Beijing overnight. Ms Jarratt said the award was a massive coup for Queensland.

“It’s wonderful to hear Queensland has been chosen as the top green tourism destination in the world by millions of Chinese travel industry members,” Ms Jarratt said.

“This achievement comes less than two months after the Premier’s trade mission to China where she unveiled ‘Project China’; a plan to attract more high-spending Chinese visitors, develop new airline and travel trade partnerships and help Queensland tourism operators cater for Chinese travellers.

“This result shows the hard work of Tourism Queensland is delivering results for Queensland and boosting the state’s profile as an eco-friendly holiday destination.

“Queensland was chosen as one of the top three green tourism destinations in the world by the selection panel and we went head-to-head with Norway and New Zealand before being voted into the number one spot by Travel Weekly China readers in an online poll.

Ms Jarratt said the award win could not have taken place within a more significant international market and was cause for optimistic forecasting.

“China is Queensland’s fourth largest and fastest growing international market with 197,000 Chinese visiting our state in the year ending March 2011, 29 percent more than the year prior,” Ms Jarratt said.

“The Chinese are also big spenders, outlaying $388 million on their trips to Queensland during the same period, a significant $62 million more than during the previous year.

“But with Chinese visitor numbers forecast to continue growing by double digits over the next few years this is no time to rest on our laurels.

“It’s vital that our tourism industry has the skills, products and experiences to make sure our Chinese friends have the best possible Queensland experience, and when they go home they tell their friends and family that Queensland truly is where Australia shines.

“Winning this ‘Green Tourism Destination of the Year’ award will not only put Queensland front-of-mind with our current and potential Chinese trade partners, but hopefully also capture the attention of millions of Chinese holidaymakers.”

Ms Jarratt said the award win was a sweet reward for Queensland’s tourism operators, particularly those who have participated in ‘China Ready’ training and Tourism Queensland’s Sustainable Regions Project.

“The Sustainable Regions Project is Australia’s first state-wide sustainable tourism project which aims to reduce the environmental impact of tourism by working with regional operators to help transform Queensland into a domestically and internationally-recognised sustainable tourism destination,” she said.

“The project has been a resounding success after being piloted in seven Queensland regions including Airlie Beach, Magnetic Island, North Stradbroke Island, Mackay Hinterland, Winton, and after running in Agnes Water/The Town of 1770 and the Capricorn Coast post pilot stage.

“An Eco-Efficiency Sustainable Regions Project is also wrapping up on the Gold Coast in partnership with the Gold Coast City Council and 10 Sunshine Coast event-focused tourism businesses are completing a Sustainable Regions program, funded through the $12 million State and Federal Governments’ tourism recovery package.

“Through the pilot stage of the project nearly 66 businesses across the state committed to reducing their combined carbon footprint by 1,237.76 tonnes of CO2 annually – that’s the equivalent of taking 289 cars of the road for a year!

“Queensland has some of the world’s most amazing natural environments and experiences on the planet, so it’s in the best interest of all to ensure we protect and sustain the natural beauty of our state.”

Peak Tourism Body Wary of Carbon Tax

Queensland’s peak body for tourism has grave concerns for the future of the tourism industry following the Gillard government’s Carbon Tax announcement yesterday.

Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) said there has been little or no recognition of the likely impact the tax will have on the tourism industry.

QTIC chief executive Daniel Gschwind said while it was impossible to gauge the exact bottom-line impact on the industry at this stage, it would certainly not be positive.

“The Gillard Government’s Carbon Tax proposal will increase the cost of doing business for many industries, including tourism, through the direct and indirect impact on energy costs,” Mr Gschwind said.

“The international competiveness of Australian tourism and hospitality services will be negatively affected, a further blow to businesses already feeling the strong Australian dollar which is seeing domestic travellers choosing cheaper overseas holidays instead of holidaying locally.

“While domestic airfares will be driven up by the tax, international fares will not. And consumers with higher incomes, and thus a greater propensity to travel, will feel more of an impact on their hip pockets thanks to the price on carbon,” he said.

Mr Gschwind said while the tourism industry was fully committed to a sustainable economy, the positive impact of the carbon tax on the environment, and tourist destinations like the Barrier Reef, was questionable.

“The tourism sector in Queensland has long recognised that a clean environment is a core asset to our industry. We have been making a significant investment, at a cost to businesses, to develop and implement sustainable practices for several years now.

“For the tourism industry in Queensland a further concern for operators is how the new carbon pricing will affect consumer confidence, with any uncertainty translating into less spending on discretionary items like holiday.

“The proposed carbon tax will create a very challenging and costly business environment that our industry now needs to navigate, with the benefits being only a minimal reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions.

“Unlike other export-oriented industries including coal and other resource industries, tourism will not receive any compensation in the proposed package, which means the forgotten sectors like tourism will suffer as we shoulder a greater burden.”

Mr Gschwind also said the Carbon Tax announcement would only compound the suffering of an industry still recovering from the floods and cyclones that ravaged the state earlier this year.

The Queensland Tourism Industry Council (QTIC) is the State’s peak body for tourism. QTIC is a not-for-profit membership organisation representing members' interests - both large and small. QTIC has in excess of 3,000 regional members, operating in all sectors of the tourism industry.

Tourism Floodgates open - Tourism Queensland

Two hundred Queensland tourism operators will set off from Brisbane by bus today on the Queensland on Tour road show through New South Wales and Victoria as part of the joint Federal and State Governments' $12 million tourism recovery funding package.
Federal Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson and Queensland Minister for Tourism Jan Jarratt said the five day interstate road show would enable Queensland tourism businesses to personally deliver the message that Nothing Beats Queensland for a holiday.

The roadshow has been coordinated by Tourism Queensland and Tourism Australia with the support of Qantas, Stonestreet’s Coaches, Accor Hotels and Queensland Rail Travel.

"The Queensland on Tour road show will roll into towns from Ballina to Bendigo and Wagga Wagga through to Wollongong personally promoting a range of Queensland holiday deals and giveaways," Minister Ferguson said.

"The 200 tourism operators represent the 14 regions of Queensland and include business owners and marketing or sales managers from some of Queensland's largest hotels, through to smaller B&Bs and family-run tour companies.

"Surf schools from the Gold Coast, wineries from Toowoomba, whale watching companies from the Fraser Coast, sailing businesses in the Whitsundays, island resorts from the Tropical North and iconic Outback attractions are just some of the tourism businesses on the road show," Minister Ferguson said.

"It's a great opportunity for those who live and work in Queensland's tourism industry to tell visitors that Nothing Beats Queensland," said Senator Jan McLucas, who represented the Australian Government at the Brisbane launch today.

"Images of flood and cyclone affected Queensland communities were beamed across Australia just a few months ago, so it is critical we continue to show that we're open for business and are welcoming visitors," Senator McLucas said.

"Queensland is one of Australia's favourite holiday spots and as temperatures in the southern states continue to drop, the road show will arrive in regional centres in New South Wales and Victoria and encourage people to head north to take advantage of Queensland's warmer winters."

Senator McLucas said the road show is a recovery initiative that was open to businesses from all sectors of the industry and will help connect participants with a network of interstate trade contacts, media and potential visitors.
The group converged on Brisbane today to interact with travel agents and potential visitors.

"Queensland on Tour is an important component of the overall Nothing Beats Queensland recovery strategy, designed to personally deliver the message to book a Queensland holiday now to support the 115,000 tourism-related businesses in Queensland," Ms Jarratt said.

"Four separate groups will depart Brisbane, criss-crossing New South Wales and Victoria to reinforce the message that Nothing Beats Queensland and encouraging people along the way to book a Queensland holiday," Ms Jarratt said.
"This Queensland on Tour road show will take Queenslanders to our potential holidaymakers and tell them in person that Queensland's tourism destinations have recovered from the floods and cyclones and we're ready to welcome them with open arms," Ms Jarratt said.

"The domestic visitor market for Queensland is the state's bread and butter with Queensland annually welcoming 16.6 million domestic visitors who spend around $11.5 billion during their visits.

"In recent months Tourism Australia and Tourism Queensland have been working hard to spread the message far and wide that Queensland is open for business and those efforts seem to be working, with operators on the Gold Coast, Townsville and Magnetic Island reporting strong Easter trading," Minister Ferguson said.

Dubbo
6 May 2011

Fifty Queensland tourism representatives rolled into Dubbo today to personally deliver the message that Nothing Beats Queensland as Australia’s favourite holiday destination.

Tourism Queensland CEO Anthony Hayes said the group formed part of the Queensland on Tour roadshow, the single largest domestic tourism roadshow in decades, comprising 200 Queensland tourism participants who are spending five days touring NSW and Victoria.

“The participating tourism businesses represent Gold Coast surf schools, South Burnett wineries, whale watching companies from the Fraser Coast, sailing businesses in the Whitsundays, island resorts from the Tropical North and iconic Outback attractions just to name a few,” Mr Hayes said.

Tourism floodgates open

06 May, 2011 04:00 AM

Fifty Queensland tourism representatives rolled into Dubbo last night to personally deliver the message that “Nothing Beats Queensland” as Australia’s favourite holiday destination.

The group was formed to demonstrate the state was bouncing back after disastrous flooding and cyclone damage.

“We are open and ready to welcome visitors," Tourism Queensland representative Emma Croft said.
After arriving on a brightly banded bus the group met with local travel agents before preparing to “meet and greet” Dubbo locals at the Church Street rotunda between eight and nine o’clock this morning.

“The roadshow crew pulled into Dubbo late yesterday on brightly branded Queensland coaches before meeting with local travel agents and spent this morning inviting local residents to Queensland.

“They were also in town to promote a range of Queensland holiday deals and giveaways for Dubbo residents the old fashioned way – by taking the message to them in person.

“The roadshow is a recovery initiative that lets those who live and work in Queensland’s tourism industry tell visitors that Nothing Beats Queensland - as Australia’s favourite holiday spot and nothing beats Queenslanders’ resilience and confidence in the future.”

Mr Hayes said four separate groups departed Brisbane on Tuesday tasked with encouraging Queensland’s southern neighbours to book a Queensland holiday along the way.

“The group has travelled through Brisbane, Ballina and Tamworth before arriving in Dubbo spreading the message along the way that Queensland is ready to welcome visitors and will pull attend the Caravan and Camping Show in Sydney tomorrow,” he said.

“These days we are used to researching our next holiday on the internet or at a travel agent where we don’t actually get to meet the locals until we get to our holiday destination.

“This is our way of taking a bit of Queensland ‘shine’ to our visitors before they arrive.”

Mr Hayes said Queensland had a rough start to the year, but the state was bouncing back with Easter proving to be a return in confidence for the state’s tourism industry.

“Our focus is now on continuing the momentum we’ve been building through the Nothing Beats Queensland recovery campaign to help Queensland’s tourism industry through the traditionally slower post-Easter period,” he said.

Mr Hayes said the Queensland on Tour roadshow was another initiative that formed part of the joint State and Federal Government’s $12 million tourism recovery funding package.

“The roadshow complements a range of other recovery initiatives rolled out in recent months including the global media tour we held in March with 200 journalists from around the world and the aggressive Nothing Beats Queensland marketing campaign currently rolling out around Australia,” he said.

“The roadshow has been coordinated by Tourism Queensland and Tourism Australia with the support of Qantas, Stonestreet’s Coaches, Accor Hotels and Queensland Rail Travel,” he said.

“Queensland annually welcomes approximately 16 million domestic visitors who spend around $11.4 billion on their visits, so it’s imperative that we continue to encourage Aussies to enjoy a holiday in Queensland, Where Australia Shines.”

Two hundred Queensland tourism operators will set out on a Queensland on Tour Roadshow through New South Wales and Victoria next month.

The roadshow is part of the joint State and Federal Governments AUD12 million tourism recovery funding package.

In a joint statement, Federal Tourism Minister Martin Ferguson, Queensland Senator Jan McLucas and Queensland Minister for Tourism, Manufacturing and Small Business, Jan Jarratt, said the five day road-show would help stimulate travel to Queensland from the domestic market.

“Interest in international visitors often overshadows the fact that domestic travel actually makes up 75% of the total tourism market, which is why the Queensland on Tour- Roadshow initiative has the potential to be so effective,” Ferguson said.

“The Australian Tourism Exchange [which ended in Sydney last week] is about bringing international buyers to meet international sellers – the roadshow will complement this activity by taking domestic sellers to domestic buyers including travel agents and interstate consumers.”

The 200 tourism operators represent wineries, attractions, tour and event companies and accommodation providers throughout the 14 regions of Queensland. They will be bussed down the East Coast courtesy of Stonestreet’s Coaches from Toowoomba on their journey as part of a AUD4.5 million interstate marketing campaign to spread the message that Queensland is open for business.

“The Australian and Queensland Governments have worked closely to help Queensland’s $9.2 billion tourism industry recover from the summer floods and cyclone and reinforce that Nothing Beats Queensland for a holiday,” Ferguson said.

“The message has been spread far and wide including through print and online advertising, a radio blitz in China, a state tour with 200 international journalists and the Foreign Minister’s support this week with a visit to the State by Canberra’s diplomatic corps.”

The roadshow participants will arrive in Brisbane on Tuesday 3 May and divide into four groups, two of which will travel south east and west visiting a range of regional centres on course for Sydney.

The other two groups will fly with tour partner Qantas directly to Melbourne and drive north before all four meet at the Caravan and Camping Show in Sydney on Saturday 7 May. Accommodation along the journey has been generously provided by Accor Hotels.

Ms Jarratt said some 115,000 tourism-related businesses operated in Queensland and it was essential to help them get back on their feet as quickly as possible.
“The recovery effort is in full swing and I think it’s fair to say that the world now knows nothing beats the resilience of Queensland’s tourism industry or Queensland as a destination,” she said.

“This roadshow is an important component of our recovery strategy, designed to personally deliver the message that to Aussies to book a Queensland holiday now to support the state’s $9.2 billion tourism industry
