Brisbane Tourism Gears up Ahead of G20

Brisbane’s tourism industry is getting a major boost ahead of this year’s G20 Summit which takes place in the Australian city later in the year.

Before 4,000 G20 delegates arrive on 15-16 November at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, seven new hotels will have opened, a raft of restaurants will hang out the welcome sign, and there is a variety of new ways to tour the city.

In addition to five hotel openings earlier in the year, Hotels NEXT and TRYP are set to open within the next two months.

Located on the old Brisbane Buffalo Club site, Wyndham Worldwide’s 65-room TRYP Fortitude Valley Hotel will rival sister properties in Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Lisbon, and New York. The hotel will also be home to UP, Brisbane’s newest rooftop bar with a capacity for 240 people cocktail style, and a lobby-level restaurant, Chur.

On 1 October, SilverNeedle Hospitality opens the world’s first NEXT hotel. This is a 304-room upscale hotel, equipped with Club Lounge, Executive Studios for meetings, and a rooftop pool that overlooks the mall.

The new properties come on the back of five other hotel openings this year, including the 18-story Alpha Mosaic Hotel in Fortitude Valley, the 68-room boutique Gambaro Hotel, the 246-room Four Points by Sheraton, the 81-storey Infinity Apartments, and the 234 one- and two-bedroom M&A Apartments.

In addition to a host of new bars and nightclubs, Brisbane’s dining scene is also dishing up a new menu of restaurants and bars, such as Jamie’s Italian, a mid-priced eatery under Britain’s celebrity chef Jamie Oliver. For a flavour of the Far East, Madame Wu, serves dishes from southern China, Hong Kong, Korea, Japan and Taiwan.

New tour options are also available to help visitors take in the sights. Tours on Xwing, offer mini Segway tours of the city’s South Bank area. Alternatively, visitors can pick-up a Discover South Bank Combo Pass, which offers a trifecta of activities including a 90-minute River City Cruise, a spin on the Brisbane Wheel, and an Australian style lunch.

Also new to Brisbane’s list of activities are new fishing tours launched in June. The two-hour boat trips navigate the Brisbane River on a catch-and-release fish-off for bream, catfish, salmon and even the odd bull shark.

AFC Asian Cup Coming To Australia 2015

The AFC Asian Cup, Asia’s biggest football tournament, is coming to Australia in January 2015.

Sydney, Newcastle, Melbourne, Canberra and Brisbane will host 32 world class football matches over 23 days, culminating with a Final played in Sydney on 31 January 2015.

It will never have been easier for families to go to the football than when the biggest tournament in Asia rolls into town in 2015.

The AFC Asian Cup organising committee has announced “family friendly” ticket packages for the tournament next summer, with kids tickets starting at $5 and families (four) from $40.

The tournament, which kicks off on January 9, will take place in five host cities – Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Canberra and Newcastle. Supporters even have the option of buying “venue packs” - tickets for all the matches at each stadium.

Tickets go on sale on May 7 for the football family, starting with the venue packs, before going on sale to the general public on  June 3.

Tickets for the tournament will go on sale in two phases, the first on May 7 and the second on June 3.

The most expensive Category One tickets are $149 for the final in Sydney on January 31 and $149 for the opening match between the Socceroos and Kuwait in Melbourne on January 9. Those prices also include the opening and closing ceremonies.

Stereosonic 2014 Music Event -- Hot Lineup!

Electronic dance music festival Stereosonic - which leaves you in no doubt about its musical leanings with stages named "FULL ON" and "HARD" - has announced a big-name line-up for its travelling two-day doof-extravaganza in November and December.

The festival will boast some of the genre's biggest names including Calvin Harris (who has had a number of worldwide top 10 singles since 2009, including Feel So Close in 2011), dubstep leader Skrillex and Tiesto (the world's richest DJ, according to Forbes). Not far behind are superstar Dj Steve Aoki, Major Lazer founder and producer to the stars Diplo (who has worked with Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Usher, Snoop and Britney Spears), British techno veteran Carl Cox and the duo Disclosure whose album Settle reached number 5 on the Australian charts in 2013. Disclosure will play a DJ set.

Eight of the DJs in the world's top 20 for 2014 (as named by the respected site djmag.com) will play at the event, which begins in Sydney and Perth on November 29 and 30, before moving to Adelaide (December 5 and 6) then Melbourne and brisbane (December 6 and 7). The eight (in order) are: Tiesto (4th), Steve Aoki (8th), Dash Berlin Dash (10th), Skrillex (11th), Alesso (13th), W&W (14th), Harris (15th) and Nervo (16th). 

Several high profile Australians join the line-up including Melbourne sound leader Will Sparks; Sydneysiders Timmy Trumpet and Tigerlily; Peking Duk and The Aston Shuffle (both from Canberra) and Triple J presenter/DJ Nina Las Vegas.

The festival is able to run in two cities at once by swapping each day's line-up between them, so the first night line-up in Sydney will play day two in Perth, and vice versa. The same will happen between Melbourne and Brisbane.

Organisers have decided not to keep anyone waiting around for tickets either, with the first batch of pre-sale tickets released tonight from 8pm. General sales commence on Tuesday ,August 5.

Family Fun Found All Over Ipswich

TIME flies when you're having fun and it goes even quicker when the kids are too.

It seemed Ipswich was not short of activities to keep the younger ones busy when we asked for some ideas on places to take the kids on Facebook.

Queens Park and Ipswich Nature Centre were popular choices for parents as was the Ipswich Art Gallery.

"Ipswich has heaps of fantastic parks, a picnic is always a great fun way to spend an afternoon with the kids," said Sharon Ross.

"So much to do in Ipswich, Art Gallery rocks but be prepared for you kids to want to spend hours there," said Janice Freiberg.

Other out of the box suggestions included a trip to the Riverheart Parklands and simply touring the city, looking at its history.

"Take them for a walk to look at heritage houses," said Lois Kilmartin.

"Ipswich has heaps, they are beautiful and all have information out front on plaques."

Other educational activities for the kids included trips to the Ipswich Library and the Workshops Rail Museum.

For those looking for more of a thrill the Tactical Ops Paintball fields in Rosewood were suggested for children aged 15 and over.

Trampoline park and indoor play centre Just Jump was also a popular choice for adventure seekers.

"Just Jump is at the sport complex across from Redbook Plaza. it's fun (we) went there last weekend," said Melissa Small.

LOOKING for something to do in the Gladstone region this weekend? Here's a rundown of some of the events and activities available.

FRIDAY

Music under the stars

APLNG and the Queensland Symphony Orchestra will present Music Under the Stars, a free community event featuring outdoor entertainment by the orchestra.

Picnic under the stars and enjoy favourites loved by all ages, including music from Tchaikovsky's The Nutcracker, Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Strauss' Blue Danube Waltz and Biset's Carmen Suites.

No alcohol, glass, pets or umbrellas are permitted. The event gets underway at 7pm.

Rock out to local talent

GLADSTONE heavy metal band Red In Tooth will rock out at the Gladstone Tennis Club on Friday night.

Starting from 6.30pm, bands such as Sixth League, Woebegone, Best Friends and acoustic act Direst Desire will also perform.

Bring your friends along to this fun event and rock out to some of the city's best bands.

Tickets are $10 at the door. All ages are welcome. The venue is licensed.

Roller disco fun

GLADSTONE PCYC Roller Derby will host a Masquerade Madness roller disco from 6.30-9.30pm.

The monthly all-ages event is popular with kids and adults, and there are skates to fit all sizes.

Food and drinks will be available, as well as games, music and fun provided by masked derby girls and guys.

Cost is $10 at the door, which includes skate hire. Children must be supervised.

LEARN about Instagram 101 with a free workshop being held at the Tondoon Botanic Gardens.

Tourism and Events Queensland in partnership with GAPDL is holding the workshop for the Gladstone region and Banana Shire from 2-4pm.

Sunday Coffee Cruise

TAKE a cruise around the Gladstone harbour and surrounding island every Sunday and Wednesday on a a Curtis Ferry Services Coffee Cruise.

Enjoy a two-hour cruise with morning tea and commentary on the Gladstone region, while keeping an eye out for turtles, dolphins and dugongs.

Cruises are held 11am-1pm. Bookings are essential and can be made through the Gladstone Visitor Information Centre.

Passengers must collect their ticket from the Information Centre at 72 Bryan Jordan Drive) before departure, and ensure they arrive at Curtis Ferry Services Terminal by 10.45am.

If the Information Centre is closed, tickets and payments can be made from the departure point.

The Sunday Coffee Cruise will run until September 28.

It’s been nearly eight years since the British superstar treated Australian audiences to his myriad talents on the live stage. In December 2006 Williams undertook a stadium tour of monumental proportion across Australia.

Williams' love for Australia has been well documented over the years, with a slew of tours and special performances (including the 2009 ARIA awards), he can also boast his most well known collaborations being with Australians; Kids, a duet with pop star Kylie Minogue and a cover of Frank & Nancy Sinatra's Somethin' Stupid with Nicole Kidman. Add to this that 2.6 million Robbie Williams albums have been sold in Australia to date – making that 1 in 10 Australians who own a Robbie album – it’s a certainty that the love affair continues.

Robbie’s latest album Swings Both Ways is the follow up to his original 2001 swing release, Swing When You’re Winning, which spent six consecutive weeks at the top of the UK charts, and likewise garnered unprecedented success in Australia, going four times platinum and remaining his best selling album of all time. Swings Both Ways sees the reunion of Robbie’s collaboration with songwriter and producer Guy Chambers; the creative pairing responsible for some of Robbie’s biggest hits (Rock DJ, Feel, Millenium, Let Me Entertain You, Angels, Supreme).

The album debuted at #1 in the UK and #5 on the ARIA charts, and within the first 4 weeks of release, the album was certified Gold in Australia. This is his eleventh chart-topping album in the UK, which now means that he draws level with Elvis Presley as the male solo artist with the most number one albums.

Armed with an arsenal packed with ballads, pop songs and massive sing-along hits, Robbie returns to the swing genre for his tenth studio album and current world tour.

Tondoon Botanic Garden showcases an outstanding collection of tropical, sub tropical and dry rainforests from Port Curtis region and Far North Queensland.

Officially opened in 1988, the tranquil balance of the Gardens is made up of superbly cultivated gardens overlooking Lake Tondoon and nestled into the undulating landscape of Mount Biondello.

For local residents and for the many interstate and international visitors, Tondoon Botanic Garden is a place of inspiration, relaxation, and recreation. Visited by over 100,000 people each year, it is a popular place for picnics, pleasant walks, cultural and ceremonial events.

Although the Cafe is closed we have free electric BBQ’s, tables and chairs as well as picnic areas for you to come and enjoy.  These can be found in the front section of the Gardens.
